If you love the crispy, golden exterior of pan-fried or grilled Halloumi but don’t want to fire up the grill or get out the cast iron, the air fryer is a great option.
It is super simple to make with just a drizzle of oil on both sides. The inside of the cheese stays nice and soft while the outside gets that classic color and taste – and you do very little work.
We love it because it’s a tasty appetizer that is perfect for summer. Halloumi pairs really well with watermelon, tomatoes, cucumber, roasted vegetables, and Mediterranean-style salads.
Ingredients
- Halloumi – We typically use real halloumi from Cyprus, but Halloumi-style cheese also works.
- Oil – We often use avocado oil, but you can also use olive oil.
Recipe Tips
- Halloumi is very salty, so you certainly don’t need to add any salt before air frying.
- Don’t overcrowd the air fryer. The halloumi slices should be in one layer so they can brown evenly.
- Try not to overcook the halloumi or it might end up dry. It will also harden a bit as it cools.
- Depending on how you cut the halloumi, your cooking time can vary slightly. It can also vary depending on your air fryer.

Step-by-Step Instructions
First, cut the halloumi into 1/2 inch slices.
If it is wet, pat the slices dry with a paper towel. Then brush both sides with oil.
Preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Then add the halloumi slices in one layer.
Air fry for about 7-9 minutes total, or until the halloumi is golden brown on both sides. The exact cooking time can vary depending on your air fryer and personal preference.
Serve the halloumi slices right away in salads or grain bowls or as an appetizer with sliced tomatoes, pepper, basil, and olive oil. Enjoy!
Storage Tips
This halloumi is best served hot and fresh out of the air fryer. As it cools, it tends to firm up slightly.
If you do end up with leftovers, you can store them in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3-5 days. You can then cut them up and use them as a salad topping, for example, but it probably won’t be as tasty as when it’s fresh.
