Recipe Tips & Substitutions

Before you head off to air fry avocado, read up on these recipe tips so that you can achieve the best results!

  • Your avocados need to be just the right amount of “ripe” to work well for fries. Too ripe and they will mush as you toss them in flour, egg, and breadcrumbs. Too hard and the avocado will be hard to cut and will feel “firm” and not taste creamy. It’s best to use avocados that are just ripe and ready to eat, but still firm.
  • Feel free to change up the spices that you mix in with the breadcrumbs to your liking.
  • For added crispiness, you can lightly spray the breaded avocado fries in an avocado cooking spray. However, this is optional and something we don’t usually do.

Step by Step Instructions

If you’d like to see visuals for how to make avocado fries in the air fryer, you can check out the recipe process photos below!

This way, if you have any questions about how exactly we made ours, you can refer to the photos as guidance.

cut up and sliced avocado on a wooden cutting board
Cut the avocado into fries.

First, cut the avocados in half, remove the pit (carefully), then make about 4 lengthwise cuts into one half of the avocado so the knife goes through the whole avo to the back peel.

Take a spoon and move in a circular motion around the outside edge of the avocado to loosen the avocado fries.

When the spoon makes it all the way around the avocado, make a scooping motion into the avocado to gently lift out the avocado fries. Place these fries on a clean plate or cutting board.

Repeat the steps with the other pieces of avocado.

Next, prepare the plates that you will use for breading the avocaod fries. Place the flour on one plate, the cracked and whisked eggs on another, and the breadcrumbs on the third plate.

Next, dip one avocado fry into the flour and turn until it is fully coated.

Then dip it into the whisked egg and move it around until it is fully coated.

Lift the fry, let the excess egg drip off, and place the piece of avocado on the plate with the breadcrumbs. Press down slightly, then turn until the avocado is fully coated.

Lastly, place the avocado fry onto a clean plate and repeat the steps until all pieces of avocado are breaded.

Preheat the air fryer to 380 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once hot, place the avocado fries onto the air fryer tray. There should be some space between them. If your air fryer is quite small, you might have to cook them in two batches.

You can lightly spray the tops of the avocado fries with some avocado cooking spray for a little extra crunch (this is optional, though).

Cook the avocado fries for 8-9 minutes until the breading is nicely brown and crispy. Turn the fries after 6 minutes.

Storage Tips

In our opinion, avocado fries taste best warm out of the air fryer. However, if you do have leftovers, you can store them in a sealed container in the fridge. They will definitely not be as crispy the next day, though.

To reheat them, avoid the microwave since they will only get soggier. Instead, put them back in the air fryer for a few minutes to reheat.

What to Serve Air Fryer Avocado Fries With

We like eating avocado fries as is as a snack but you can also serve them with a number of dipping sauces like chipotle mayo or a simple blend of half mayo/half ketchup!

You might also eat avocado fries as a side with another type of finger food like chicken nuggets or serve them as one item on a charcuterie board!

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 8 minutes
Total Time: 28 minutes
Servings: 20 fries

Ingredients

  • 2 avocados, just ripe
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs, unseasoned
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • oil cooking spray, optional

Instructions

  • Cut the avocados in half, remove the pit (carefully), then make about 4 lengthwise cuts into the avocado so the knife goes through the whole avo to the back peel. Take a spoon and move in a circular motion around the outside edge of the avocado to loosen the avocado fries. When the spoon makes it all the way around the avocado, make a scooping motion into the avocado to gently lift out the avocado fries. Place these fries on a clean plate or cutting board. Repeat the steps with the rest of the avocados.
  • Prepare the "breading station" by placing flour on one plate, cracked and whisked eggs on another, and breadcrumbs on the third plate.
  • Add the salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika to the plate with the breadcrumbs and mix until well combined.
  • Dip one avocado fry into the flour and turn until it is fully coated. Next, dip it into the whisked egg and move it around until it is fully coated. Then lift the fry, let the excess egg drip off, and place the piece of avocado on the plate with the breadcrumbs. Press down slightly, then turn until the avocado is fully coated. Place the avocado fry onto a clean plate and repeat the steps until all pieces of avocado are breaded.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 380 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Once hot, place the avocado fries onto the air fryer tray. There should be some space between them. If your air fryer is quite small, you might have to cook them in two batches.
  • You can lightly spray the tops of the avocado fries with some avocado cooking spray for a little extra crunch (this is optional, though).
  • Cook the avocado fries for 8-9 minutes total until the breading is nicely brown and crispy. Turn the fries after 6 minutes.
  • Remove the avocado fries from the air fryer tray and serve with your favorite dipping sauce or just eat them as is!

Notes

  • The avocado needs to be "just ripe" – too ripe and the fries will mush as you handle and bread them. If the avocado is not ripe at all, the fries might taste strange.
