Recipe Tips

Before you make your way to the kitchen to make air fried plantains, read through these recipe tips so that you achieve great results!

  • We’d recommend using a plantain with yellow peel. This way the plantain chips have a hint of sweetness. If you want them sweeter, you can wait until the peel starts to develop some black spots. While you can use green plantains, they will taste quite starchy and not sweet at all.
  • Cut the slices approximately 1/4 of an inch thick. Any thinner and they might crisp too quickly/unevenly. Any thicker and the middles of the plantain chips might bee too soft.
  • Adding some salt can bring out the natural sweetness of the plantains. However, don’t add too much at once. We would recommend only adding a sprinkle at first – you can always add more later after they are air-fried.

Make sure to use a plantain with a yellow peel.

As mentioned, we’d recommend using a plantain that has a yellow peel – with some black spots if you want a slightly sweeter taste.

While you can use a plantain with green peel, it won’t have a sweet taste.

At this time, preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Meanwhile, cut the ends off the plantain. Slice the peel with a knife once lengthwise, then remove the peel from around the plantain.

Air fry the plantain chips at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 11-14 minutes total until they are fully cooked, lightly browned and crispy on the outside.

Remember to flip the chips halfway through the cooking time. Every air fryer cooks slightly differently, so the exact cooking time can vary.

Storage Tips

We doubt that there will be any plantain chips leftover when making them in the air fryer.

However, if you make a big batch, you can store them in a sealed container at room temperature and eat them within 2-3 days. Just make sure that the plantain chips were fully cooked!

Notes

We would not recommend using green plantains since they won't be sweet at all. Make sure the plantain peel is at least yellow in color. If you want the chips to be sweeter, wait until the plantain has some dark spots on the peel.
