Recipe Tips

Before you make beet chips in the air fryer, you should quickly read through these recipe tips so that you know just what to expect!

  • Beets have a tendency to stain clothes, surfaces, cutting boards, hands, etc. So, when you make this recipe, wear/use things you don’t mind getting stained!
  • Make sure to scrub the beets very well with a vegetable scrubber. This will remove the earthy taste that some people don’t enjoy. Alternatively, you could also peel the beets but we don’t usually do that.
  • Make sure to cut the beets into slices of even thickness. This works best with a mandolin but you can also try it with a knife if you don’t have one.
  • You can always modify the spice blend for these beet chips. We like keeping it simple with salt and pepper but you could always add seasonings of your choice.

Scrub the beets.

First, scrub the beets really well in the sink with a vegetable scrubber.

Cut off the ends.

Then pat the beets dry with a paper towel (you don’t want to stain a good dishtowel) and trim the ends off.

Do this on a cutting board that you would be okay with if it got stained.

Slice the beets.

Then cut the beets into 1/8 inch thick slices using a knife or a mandolin (this is the preferred way since results are more even).

Try to cut the beet slices as even as possible.

Add the beet slices, oil, and spices to a bowl.

At this time, preheat the air fryer to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

While you wait for the air fryer to heat, add the beet slices into a mixing bowl. Also add in the oil, salt, and pepper.

Add some of the beet slices to the preheated air fryer.

When the air fryer is hot, add enough beet slices for one even layer into the air fryer basket.

A little overlap is okay since they shrink up, but it shouldn’t be too much.

Cook the beet slices.

Cook the beet slices for 13-16 minutes until crispy but not burned on the outside edges. Keep in mind that they will get a bit crispier as they cool.

There’s no need to flip the slices but check on them every few minutes and move them back into place in case they moved due to the air currents.

Place the beet chips on a cooling rack.

Once cooked, remove the beet chips from the air fryer and place them on a cooling rack.

Some beet chips might be done a minute or two before the others – just remove them and leave the others in.

Once the beet chips are all removed, add the second batch to the air fryer to cook. Repeat until all the beet chips have been cooked. Enjoy!

Storage Tips

Air-fried beet chips are best enjoyed fresh out of the air fryer once they have cooled a bit.

If you have leftovers, you can store them in a container or bag at room temperature.

We recommend eating them sooner rather than later since they will lose some of their crispiness over time – but you probably won’t have them long anyway!

  • Cook the beet slices for 13-16 minutes until crispy but not burned on the outside edges. Keep in mind that they will get a bit crispier as they cool. There's no need to flip the slices but check on them every few minutes and move them back into place in case they moved due to the air currents.

Notes

  • It’s best to prepare the beets in older clothing on an older cutting board since beets can stain (mostly clothing, dishtowels, hands, cutting boards) very easily!
  • You can skip the pepper if you don’t want them to have a slight peppery kick.
