Recipe Tips

Before you go and make kale chips in the air fryer, you should read through these recipe tips so that you know what to expect when you air fry!

  • When ripping the kale into bite-sized pieces make sure to not include the stem since it won’t get crispy during the short time in the air fryer.
  • We use very common spices for our seasonings – and you can certainly swap out any that you don’t like! Cayenne pepper might be good to add for a bit of actual spicy kick to these chips.
  • Make sure to not overcrowd your air fryer. This way the kale chips can cook evenly and get very crispy.
  • Kale chips only need a few minutes and can burn quite quickly – that’s why it is important to stay close by and check on them regularly.
  • The kale chips are pretty fragile when cooked so be careful when you transfer them to the bowl from the air fryer!

Rip the kale into bite-sized pieces

First, wash and dry the kale. Then rip of bite-sized pieces along the stem – be sure not to include the stem.

The pieces can be on the larger end since the kale will shrink up quite a bit in the air fryer.

Gently mix until the oil and spices are evenly distributed.

At this time, preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then lace the kale, oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper into a mixing bowl.

Gently mix everything together with your hands until the kale pieces are evenly coated.

When the air fryer is hot, add half the kale in one even layer into the air fryer tray (with no overlap).

Cook the kale chips until crispy but not burned.

Cook the kale chips for 2-4 minutes until crispy but not burned. Check frequently after the 2-minute mark since the kale pieces can burn very quickly!

Shake the basket every minute or so to make sure the kale chips all cook evenly.

You can add more seasonings if you wish.

Once the kale chips are cooked, remove them from the air fryer tray and place them in a bowl.

Then add the rest of the kale into the air fryer and cook.

When done, add these chips into the bowl as well. You can add more salt or other seasonings before eating if desired. Enjoy!

Storage Tips

Air fried kale chips are best enjoyed right out of the fryer while they are nice and crispy (after they have cooled down slightly).

If you do have any chips left over, you can store them carefully in a sealed container on the counter at room temperature. Make sure they have cooled first!

They’ll last for a couple of days – but we don’t anticipate you’ll have them for more than a day (because they are super tasty…).
