For a light and crispy snack that is easy to make, you should try these air fryer sweet potato chips!
Lightly seasoned and full of crunch, these sweet potato chips have a hint of sweetness and are hard to stop eating once you get going.

Recipe Tips
Before you sprint to the kitchen to make these sweet potato chips in the air fryer, read through the recipe tips so that you have great results!
- You’ll get the crispiest sweet potato chips if you cut them thin. This works best with a mandolin since you get even results. If you don’t have one, you can try it with a knife but it might be a bit more difficult.
- You can vary the spices however you like. We like to keep things simple with some salt and smoked paprika but you could always add other spices like cayenne pepper (for some added kick).
- The thickness of the sweet potato slices will change the cooking time. We tried two different thicknesses – 1/8th of an inch and 1/16th of an inch. The thicker chips – unsurprisingly – took longer to crisp up and had more chip in every bite. The thinner ones crisped up quickly and were very crunchy. It’s really up to personal preference since both thicknesses do work for sweet potato chips!
- It’s important to not overcrowd the air fryer when making sweet potato chips since you want them to get crispy.
We use this air fryer for our recipes and it has been great.

First, wash and scrub the sweet potato, then dry it well. There’s no need to peel it.
Trim the ends off the sweet potato, then slice it into 1/16 inch or 1/8 inch slices depending on your preference.
This works best with a mandolin but you can also try with a knife if you don’t have a mandolin.

Above you can see the different thicknesses. 1/16 inch is the photo on the left, 1/8 inch is the photo on the right.

At this time preheat the air fryer to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
Place the sweet potato slices in a bowl and add oil, paprika (optional), and salt.

Toss everything until the slices are evenly coated.

When the air fryer is hot, add enough slices to cover the bottom of the air fryer tray.
The sweet potato chips should be in one layer with no major overlap (a tiny bit is okay).
If you have a very large air fryer, you might be able to fit all of the slices – otherwise, cook them in two batches.

Cook the sweet potato chips for 6-8 minutes for 1/16 inch chips and 12-14 minutes for 1/8 inch chips until crispy but not burned.
There is no need to flip the chips since they are so thin but check them every few minutes and put them back in place if they have moved.
The exact cooking time can vary by air fryer so check them regularly. Thicker cut chips will certainly take longer to cook.

Once the chips are done, remove them from the air fryer and place them on a cooling rack.
Then add the second batch of sweet potato slices to the air fryer and cook. Repeat until all the chips are cooked. Enjoy!

Storage Tips
Air fried sweet potato chips are best enjoyed fresh out of the air fryer once they have cooled a bit.
Keep any leftovers in a sealed bag or container at room temperature. Make sure to eat them sooner rather than later since they can lose their crispiness quickly.
