With a delicious filling made from breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, and simple spices, these stuffed mushroom caps are sure to impress.
If you’re not a fan of creamy stuffings, you’ll love this crumbly, dry filling with a salty, oily crunch!

Of course, there are so many different fillings you could make for these mushrooms!
Ingredients

To make these stuffed mushrooms in the air fryer, here are the ingredients that you will need. It looks like a lot, but it’s actually mostly just seasonings!
- Cremini mushrooms – Use medium to large mushrooms so you can stuff them easily.
- Avocado oil, + Oil spray – Some oil for the filling, more to spray before air frying.
- Breadcrumbs – You can use unseasoned breadcrumbs or Italian-style breadcrumbs (in which case, reduce the amount of extra Italian seasoning). You can also try it with Panko breadcrumbs.
- Parmesan cheese, finely grated – Use finely grated parmesan cheese. For best results, grate it yourself.
- Italian seasoning – To add flavor. Alternatively, use fine herb blend or other seasonings of your choice.
- Garlic powder – For extra flavor.
- Salt, or to taste – Add more or less to taste.
- Black pepper – To taste.
- Chopped parsley – To garnish; this is completely optional.
Recipe Tips and Substitutions
Before you make these air fried stuffed mushrooms, read through the recipe tips so that you know what to expect and end up with the best stuffed mushrooms!
- Try using medium to large cremini mushrooms since you can fill them better. Also try to use mushrooms that are about the same size so that they cook evenly.
- We wouldn’t recommend portobello mushrooms because that would take quite a bit of filling and they typically aren’t too deep. That said, we love air fryer portobello mushrooms!
- If the parmesan cheese you are using is very salty, you may want to reduce the extra salt you add.
- Instead of parmesan cheese, you can also use grated mozzarella or cheddar cheese.
- You can use unseasoned breadcrumbs or Italian style breadcrumbs. If you use Italian-style breadcrumbs, you can reduce or omit the extra Italian seasoning.
- Don’t overstuff the mushrooms. Otherwise the filling may spill out during cooking.
- You can vary the stuffing mixtures. For example, reduce the amount of breadcrumbs by half and add two tablespoons of cream cheese if you like a creamier filling.

Step by Step Instructions
This section is all about seeing how to make these air fryer mushroom caps. We’ve included the recipe process photos so you can see how we made them each step of the way.
Of course, the recipe card with the exact measurements and recipe details can be found at the bottom of this post!

First, gently clean the mushrooms with a damp paper towel. Don’t submerge them in water, as the mushrooms would absorb and this can affect their flavor.

Next, remove the stems by gently moving them around – they should snap off at some point.
You can also scoop out the gills with a small spoon or break them up and remove them but it’s not necessary.

This is what the mushroom caps should look like once you have removed the stems.

Remove the dirty ends of the stems, then finely chop the remaining stem pieces on a cutting board.

Place the chopped stems, oil, breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt and pepper in a mixing bowl.

Mix everything together well.
At this time also preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Stuff the mushrooms with the mixture. Press it down gently into the mushrooms but don’t have the filling heaping (it’s not the type of filling for it).

The stuffing was perfect for the number of mushrooms we had.

Place the mushrooms in the hot air fryer without any overlap. Lightly spray the mushrooms with oil spray.
You may need to cook the mushrooms in batches if they do not all fit in the air fryer.

Air fry the mushrooms at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 6-9 minutes until the mushrooms are soft and the filling is golden brown.
The exact cooking time can vary depending on the size of the mushrooms, your air fryer, and personal preference.

When done, remove the stuffed mushrooms from the air fryer and sprinkle with chopped parsley (optional).
Serve and enjoy (but be careful because they are hot on the inside).
Storage Tips
You can store any leftover stuffed mushrooms in a sealed container in the fridge. Just make sure the mushrooms have cooled completely before storing them. They will last for up to 3 days.
To reheat them, it’s as easy as putting them back in the air fryer. The reheat setting on our air fryer is 280 degrees Fahrenheit and we use this for just a few minutes until the mushrooms are heated through.
FAQ
Here are some answers to questions about making stuffed mushrooms:
How long it takes to cook stuffed mushrooms in the air fryer depends on a number of factors including the filling, the size of the mushrooms, and the air fryer used. We made a dry, crumbly filling with cheese and breadcrumbs in medium-large cremini mushrooms and they only took about 8 minutes to cook through and crisp up at 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Clean the mushrooms, then remove the stem. Combine the stuffing ingredients with chopped stem and fill the caps. Place in the air fryer, spray with oil, and air fry at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 7-10 minutes until cooked and the filling is golden brown.
